Otomo Yoshihide (born 1959 in Yokohama, Japan) is a Japanese composer and multi-instrumentalist, he plays guitar, turntables, and electronics.
He was born in Yokohama, but moved to Fukushima when he was nine years old. In high school, he frequented jazz cafes and started his own band. After entering university, he began studying under the improvisational jazz guitarist, Masayuki Takayanagi. He began performing around the world and released his first album in 1991 in Hong Kong.
In 1990 he formed the band Ground Zero (initially to play the John Zorn game piece Cobra). His most important projects also include: I.S.O trio with Ichiraku Yoshimitsu and Sachiko M, Filament duo with Sachiko M, Miira ni Narumade, Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Ensemble and Otomo Yoshihide Quartet.
He participated in morethan 200 releases and performed with: Merzbow, Christian Marclay, John Zorn, Yamatsuka Eye, Tatsuya Oe, Jon Rose, Jim O’Rourke, Nobukazu Takemura, Bill Laswell, Tatsuya Yoshida, Martin Tétreault, Mats Gustafsson, Alfred 23 Harth, Peter Rehberg, eRikm Peril, Peril, The Thing a.o.
In 1999 he curated the Music Unlimited Festival in Wels under the title ”Mottomo Otomo”.
